There was plenty to be thankful for as the Wetaskiwin Icemen notched a pair of wins this Thanksgiving weekend.
Facing the Beaumont Chiefs on the road at the Ken Nichol Arena Friday, Oct. 5, the Icemen opened the scoring with goals from Reid Pankewicz, assisted by Kona Jackson, and Lane Lighting, assisted by Bryn Pankewicz and Ryan Chambers.
The Chiefs rallied back and came up with a pair of goals of their own, the last coming with 49 seconds left in the first period.
In the second, the Chiefs Nic Moulding pushed his team ahead but Icemen Landson Siegle, with help from Reid Pankewicz tied it up heading into the third.
Following a hard battle in the third, the tie was in place with less than five minutes left when Siegle and Jackson teamed up for a short-handed goal at 4:38 to take the 4-3 win home to Wetaskiwin.
On Sunday, the team took on the St. Albert Merchants at the Civic Arena.
Wetaskiwin opened the scoring with a goal from Bryn Pankewicz, assisted by Tyson Gruninger and Zach Ayotte, halfway through the first period but St. Albert put in one three minutes later.
In the second period, both goalies kept their team battling, however almost halfway through the first, Icemen goalie Devin Allen let one past to move the Merchants ahead.
In response, Icemen Bryn Pankewicz, Lane Lightning and Ryan Chambers put three behind Merchants goalie Brandon Boughen.
The Merchants were able to get one more past Allen before the Icemen Tyson Gruninger potted the last two of the game to wrap up Thanksgiving with a 6-3 win against the Merchants.
The Icemen head up Hwy. 2A to take on the Leduc Co-op Riggers Friday at 8 p.m. at the Leduc Recreation Centre’s Sobey’s Rink before coming home Sunday for a 6 p.m. tilt against the Spruce Grove Regals.
