73’s shut out Lakers

WALLACEBURG – Essex 73’s goalie Connor Meyerink had a 13-save shutout in a 5-0 win over the Wallaceburg Lakers on Wednesday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.

Lakers goalie Patrick Timpany made 33 saves in front of 110 fans at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.

The Lakers (0-27-0-2) dressed only 17 players, but they shut out the 73’s in the first period.

The first-place 73’s (26-5-0-3) received four goals in the second from William Stadder, Quinn Fazekas, Josh Pope-Ferguson and Bryce Ryan. Riley Meyerink scored in the third.

The 73’s moved five points ahead of the second-place Dresden Kings (24-7-0-2), who have one game in hand.

Sharks lose to Admirals

WHEATLEY – The Wheatley Omstead Sharks lost to the Amherstburg Admirals 5-2 on Wednesday in the PJHL Stobbs Division.

Jordan Paquette and Matt Taylor scored for the seventh-place Sharks (13-16-0-2) before 377 fans at Wheatley Area Arena

Sharks goalie Catalin Morin made 41 saves, while Ben Larder made 28 for the third-place Admirals (20-7-0-3).

The Admirals outscored the Sharks 3-0 in the second period for a 4-1 lead.

Dean Deluca scored two for the Admirals. Travis Campbell, Cory Burns and Max Clifford added singles.

Carleton leading scorer

AMES, Iowa – Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting for the No. 25 Iowa State Cyclones in a 96-58 win over the Kansas State Wildcats on Wednesday.

Carleton also had nine rebounds and seven assists in the Cyclones’ Big 12 conference opener.

She was 4-of-10 on three-pointers.

The Cyclones (11-2) will visit the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday.

Youth soccer sign-up

The Chatham Youth Soccer Association will hold eight registration dates in January and February at its office at 170 McNaughton Ave. W.

Players can sign up Jan. 28 and 30 from 5-7 p.m., Feb. 1 from 5-7 p.m., Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 4, 6 and 8 from 5-7 p.m., and Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Anyone who wants to register after Feb. 9 can call 519-352-1999 and leave a message.

Mini players (born in 2013-15) pay $100, youth players (born in 2001-12) pay $140, and senior players pay $160. Discounts are available for families with three or more players.
