Belleville’s Jackie Jarrell scored her ninth goal of the World Women’s In-Line Hockey Championships in Barcelona, Spain Wednesday, but missed her shootout opportunity and Canada fell 3-2 to Italy in the quarterfinals and bowed out of the tournament.
It is the first time in 11 trips to the World Championships Jarrell will not win a medal. She has two gold, six silver and two bronze medals from previous championships.
Italy moves on to the semi-finals versus the Czech Republic, while the United States takes on host Spain in the other semi-final.
Twelve members of Belleville’s Apollo Barbell Club joined coaches Bob and Tony Walt at last Saturday’s Collingwood Open and walked away with three gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
Elijah Martindale won the Best Lifter Award in the junior male category and a bronze medal in the 96 kg class with a total lift of 195 kg.
Yvonne Orser won gold in the 87+ kg class with a total lift of 79 kg. Cindy Martindale also won gold in the 87 kg class with a total lift of 79 kg. Joanne Moring won gold in the 81 kg class with a total lift of 88 kg.
Silver medals were won by for Carson Orser in the 67 kg class with a total lift of 116 kg, Mike Carroll in the 109 kg class with a total lift of 170 kg, and Christine Walt in the 81 kg class with a total lift of 71 kg.
Also having strong performances were Kayla Martindale in the 64 kg class with a total lift of 111 kg, Helga Bastiaan in the 69 kg class with a total lift of 100 kg, Meredith Stranges in the 71 kg class with a total lift of 112 kg. Nick Stranges in the 89 kg class with a total lift of 148 kg, and Bob Walt in the 89 kg class with a total lift of 138 kg.

Tuesday in Peterborough, Belleville’s Dish Salon U17/U18 Comets girls clipped Kawartha Inferno 1-0 with Brooklynne Parks recording the shutout and Morgan Hawley scoring the game’s only goal.
Wednesday in Cobourg, the Quinte West U14 Wolverines boys battled Northumberland United to a 2-2 draw.
Michael Dolton and Jack Lowry scored for the Wolverines.
Tuesday at Trenton’s Centennial Park, the U16 Wolverines boys were hammered 15-0 by Whitby Iroquois.
Legendz/Moosehead blanked Astra 2-0 in Bay of Quinte Women’s Soccer League Division 1 play Wednesday at M.A. Sills Park.
M. Coffey and Morgan Harnest supplied the goals, while Mel Langdon recorded the shutout.
On Monday at Zwick’s Park, Quinte Cosmos shut out McDougall Insurance 3-0, with Rhiann Nicol registering the clean sheet.

EMS-Tech outgunned The Work Gear 8-6 in Belleville Ladies Business Softball League action Wednesday at Legion Park.
Joni Hoover pitched the win for EMS-Tech, allowing six runs on 14 hits and one walk, while striking out 12 in going the distance. Kathy Lidster took the loss for Work Gear, giving up eight runs on 16 hits and one walk, while fanning four batters. Rachel Smith pitched one inning of relief, allowing one hit and zero runs.

Tammy Wood took the loss, allowing 18 runs on 20 hits and four walks, with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Patsy King gave up seven runs on six hits and one walk in one inning of relief.
