The Simcoe Braves have qualified for the U16 National Fastball Championships in Saskatoon.

“This year we’re a team of all first year kids, with three underage players,” said Adam Walker, coach of the Braves. “We’ve been improving every game and getting better as the season goes along. It all worked out to a good finish last weekend.”

The qualifiers were a double knockout tournament. The Braves won their first game 12-0, their second game 6-1, and their third game 6-3.

“It was a total team effort, the kids played really, really well together,” said Walker.

This is the team’s second time attending the Canadian championship in two years.

“Last year we expected to go and we were the favourites to win the whole thing, and this year playing against kids that are all older than us, it was possible but everything had to go right,” said Walker.

The team has been practising together since January to prepare for this season.

Members of the team are Aiden Cloet, Mike Walker, Zach Mccracken, Owen Bilinsky, Braden Moore, Cole Haviland, Nolan Bultena, Nate Veldstra, Ryan Vannetten, and Nolan Myers.

The championship is taking place in Saskatoon on August 1 to 5.
