The Nait Ooks women’s hockey team hung onto first place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings on the outdoor ice in Falun during the Falun Female Frozen Challenge Saturday.

The Ooks beat the Grant MacEwan University Griffins 1-0 when Megan LeBlanc scored with seven seconds remaining in double overtime.

The weather was a factor in the first ACAC outdoor hockey game as the snow fell; forcing stoppages in play for ice scraping and struggles to pass, shoot and stick handle as the snow built up.

Despite that, the battle between the long-time rivals was intense.

The historic hockey game was part of Pigeon Lake Athletic Cultural Educational Society’s gala fund raiser to raise money for ongoing improvements at the outdoor rink.
