The Chatham Maroons nearly erased a five-goal deficit before losing 7-5 to the Komoka Kings on Saturday.

Rookie Dylan Glinski led the Maroons’ comeback attempt with his second consecutive hat trick before 268 fans at the Komoka Wellness Centre.

Rookies David Brown and Colin Whaley also scored.

The Maroons trailed 5-1 after the first period and 6-1 midway in the second before scoring four straight goals.

Whaley began the rally with his first goal in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. Glinski followed with a natural hat trick.

“It’s going great,” Whaley, 18, said about his first GOJHL season. “The boys have been very welcoming. Coach Ty (Roeszler) has really given me a lot of opportunities to better myself and ease me into the transition very well.”

Whaley has seven points in 11 games after scoring again Sunday.

“The only goal I really have is just to get better each and every day,” said the native of Adrian, Mich. “I came here to develop and get better. Coach Ty has really been pushing me. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

“I think I’ve become a better player and I just hope it continues.”

Glinski scored at 10:18 of the third period for a 6-5 game, but Nicholas Yearwood of the Kings replied 42 seconds later with his second goal of the night.

Maroons goalie Brenden Stroble gave up six goals on 22 shots and Luka Dobrich allowed one on nine shots.

Omar Hage of the Kings made 41 saves.

Colin Holmes of Chatham and Easton Cowan staked the Kings to a 2-0 lead.

After Brown scored for the Maroons, the Kings went ahead 5-1 on goals by Kaeden Johnston, Carter McLlwain and Matthew Gough in the first period. Yearwood scored for a 6-1 lead.
