Curling is known as “the roaring game”. People think that this comes from the shouting that skips do to encourage their sweepers to sweep more or “hurry hard’. This isn’t the case however.
The moniker was given to the sport for the sound the stones made as they travelled down the ice. While rocks typically don’t roar these days on artificial ice surfaces, there was a definite hum to the game when it was played on the frozen lochs of Scotland where it originated.
They may not be making a lot of noise, but the team of Cathy Murdock and Mike Strickland are off to a great start in the doubles league with their fourth straight win, 9 – 6 over Adam Glen and Amelie Legace. In the other doubles match this week Kate Nicholson and Greg Tiesma recorded their first win of the season, 10 – 6 over Cathy and Curtis McNeil.
Dave Delano and his team of Mary Ellen Warren, Faye Ribey and Cody Joudry were this weeks double-header team in the Monday/Tuesday league.
In the first half they played to a 2 – 2 tie with Camp Kintail and in the second half they lost to Karen Kan 5 – 3 in a very well played game. That win moves Karen’s team into a share of the league lead with a record of 4 wins and a tie in five games.
Also with only a tie to blemish their record is Brian Good’s team after their 9 – 4 win over Hugh McBurney and ‘Western Rocks’. Crashing out of first place this week was ‘Team Monforton’ who were routed by Vicki Culbert’s crew 12 – 3.
Denise Moulton and the ‘FROZEN A$$ET$’ also have only one defeat on their record after a convincing win over James Buchanan.
Looking for their first win of the season, Ernie Schaerer and ‘Bruce’s Bunch’ jumped out to a 4 – 0 lead after two ends against Roger Haines and ‘Ginn on the Rocks’. Unfortunately that was all she wrote for the ‘bunch’ as Ginn came back to win 11 – 4.
In a battle between two of the Wednesday/Thursday league’s unbeaten teams Grant Dawson and the ‘Dotson’s’ edged Donna Adam’s ‘Hot Rockers’ 6 – 4. The only other undefeated team, led by Roger Moore improved to 5 and 0 with their tight 8 – 7 win over Charlie Crawford and the Port Albert ‘Ice Cubes’.
Last year’s champs ‘Tiesma Tarps improved to 4 and 1 with a 14 – 3 romp over the still winless ‘Camp Kintail’. Curtis McNeil and the ‘Stone Slingers’ also have only one defeat on their record after their 8 – 6 win over Jeff Sowerby.
Bert Dirven and the ‘Ring Dingers’ engaged in a curling slugfest with Mark Jenkins and ‘Kinda Dunn’ with Bert prevailing in the end 11 – 10.
In other games Greg Bos beat Vicki Culbert 10 – 3, Jane Corrigan and the ‘Parker Gang’ won a 10 – 5 decision over Brenda Tiechert and ‘Taken 4 Granite’ and Cindy Carter led the ‘Outsliders’ to an 8 – 6 win over the ‘IceBergs’.
