Knights, Colts win openers
St. Mary’s and Korah began the High School Hockey League playoffs with Game 1 semifinal victories on Sunday. The Knights got an overtime goal from Josh Mannarino to beat Central Algoma Secondary School 4-3 in the opener of their best-of-three series. Mannarino also added a pair of assists. Nick Niro scored twice for the winners and Thomas Irwin had the other goal. Check Webb finished with two assists.
Mack Ableson scored a pair of power-play goals for the Huskies while Joe Lamoureux also scored on the power play and added an assist.
Meantime, Sean Zago posted the shutout as the Colts won 3-0 to go up 1-0 in their best-of-three semi with Superior Heights. Mitchell Neveau scored twice and added an assist for the Colts while Connor Caruso had the other goal.
Soo Thunderbirds bounced back with a 4-3 victory in Blind River on Sunday after losing 7-1 to Rayside-Balfour on Saturday at John Rhodes Community Centre.
The weekend split leaves the Soo with a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League record of 29-17-2-3 (wins, losses, overtime losses, shootout losses).
Jacob Kovacs had a goal and two assists in Sunday’s win, while Cooper Smyl, Tyler Savard and Kurtis Rogers completed the scoring. Dakota Meyer was between the pipes and the T-Birds held a 48-44 edge in shots.
Savard had the Soo’s lone goal on Saturday as Meyer and Sam Evola split netminding duties. Rayside outshot the home team 32-12.
Chaffay sparks Jr. Hounds
The Soo Jr. Greyhounds stopped Kapuskasing 7-5 at John Rhodes Community Centre on Friday in their lone Great North Midget League weekend clash.
Michael Chaffay notched three goals and one assist, while Devin Mauro finished with a goal and two assists as the Hounds improved to 24-4-2-1 (wins, losses, overtime losses, shootout losses).
Connor Toms and Calem Mangone contributed a goal and an assist and Kolby Fellinger completed the scoring. Ty Zachary notched a pair of assists and Gavin Disano was in goal for the home team.
