Flyers blow out Legionnaires

Nolan DeGurse scored his conference-leading 37th goal for the Sarnia Legionnaires in a 9-1 loss to the Leamington Flyers on Saturday before a crowd of 1,108 at Sarnia Arena.

The Flyers led 3-0 early in the second period on Nick Smith’s natural hat trick.

DeGurse scored in the second at 16:16, but the Flyers replied with three goals in 1:54 before the intermission.

The Flyers added three more in the third.

Legionnaires goalie Justin Vertesi made 31 saves.

Griffin Robinson and Maddux Rychel each scored two for the Flyers, Jacob Kalandyk and Wyatt O’Neil added singles, and Matthew Waite made 27 saves.

The Legionnaires (17-26-1-3) remain tied with the Komoka Kings for seventh place in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference. Both teams have three games left.

The Legionnaires will visit the St. Marys Lincolns on Monday, host the LaSalle Vipers at 7:10 p.m. Thursday, and visit the St. Thomas Stars on Friday.

The Legionnaires have already clinched a playoff berth.
