Astros top Rams in playoffs

Tuesday, the Allenford Astros beat the Owen Sound Rams 3-2 in the first game of the OSMFL playoffs. Scott Charlton and Dan McComb combined to take the loss for Rams, while Ryan Greig pitched the win for Allenford. Charlton and McComb gave up three walks, seven hits and had 10 strikeouts, while Greig gave up five hits, one intentional walk and had nine strikeouts. Devin Stephens had a two-run home run for the Astros, while Ty McComb hit his second triple of the season, and since 1997, while Greig chipped in with a double and a single.

Midget Sting stun Titans

The Shallow Lake Sting midgets squad topped the Tara Titans 11-7 Monday night.  Winning pitcher Austin McComb had 12 strikeouts.  Mathew Weiler homered and had a single.

Shallow Lake bantams, Yellow Jackets advance

The Shallow Lake Sting bantams shut out the Keady Jets 1-0 Monday to continue on in the OSMFL playoff championship bracket. The 3JBC Yellow Jackets scored in the double-digits to defeat Sutherland 10-4.

Wednesday night contests in OSMFL 

The Shallow Lake Sting midget club will take on the Allenford Astros Wednesday night at Duncan McLellan Park in Round 2 action. The Sting bantams will play the Allenford Astros. In the Loser’s Bracket  the Tara Titans meet Sutherland while the Keady Jets and Owen Sound Rams battle to stay alive in the double-elimination playoffs.

GREY BRUCE LADIES FASTBALL LEAGUE

Suicide squeeze plates winning run

The Desboro Royals eliminated The Allenford Gators from the Grey Bruce Ladies Fastball League playoffs with a 1-0 shut-out win. The Royals’ Kaitlyn Knox executed a suicide-squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Maddy Moore from third. Moore earned the win, allowing four hits; all singles, with six strikeouts and no walks. Allenford’s Keri Emke went the distance, allowing four hits; all singles, with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Bad News Bears edge Devils 

On Tuesday night the Bad News Bears defeated the Port Elgin Lady Devils by a score of 8-6. Pitching for the Bears was Courtney Torrie. Jami Smith, Julia Lantz, and Tayna Redmond all pitched for Port Elgin. The Bears got their big hits from Amanda Zettle with a triple, a single and a double, while Torrie had a triple and two singles. Georgia Ottewell also had two singles. Port Elgin had a triple and a single from Laura Kranenburg, while Lindsey Dales had a double.

Rouse Twins take Tara tussle

The Tara James Rouse Custom Builder Twins defeated the Tara Grieg Precision Renos Twins in a matchup of the two top teams in the Mite Division, 5-2.  All batters for The Rouse Custom Builders led the way, and the pitching of Ethan Sopkowe and Alek Fritz kept the Greig Precision Renos at bay.

Morassutti scores lone goal in loss

The Owen Sound Ken Burrows & Son/Sound Speech & Hearing United under-13 boys soccer team fell short on Monday night as they lost to the Kitchener Spirit B soccer team by a score of 3-1 in regional SWRSL action in Kitchener.  Dominic Morassutti had the lone goal for Owen Sound.

ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE

Canada Russia Series hitting London and Kitchener 

The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series will make stops in London and Kitchener this year. The puck drops in New Brunswick with the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Moncton Wildcats hosting Game’s 1 and 2 respectively on Nov. 4 and  5.  When the series shifts to Ontario it will be the Kitchener Rangers hosting Game 3 on Nov. 7 followed by the London Knights hosting Game 4 on Nov. 11.  The series will then wrap up in Saskatchewan with the Saskatoon Blades and the Prince Albert Raiders hosting Game’s 5 and 6 on Nov. 13 and Nov. 14.

NORTH STARS LACROSSE

Golden girls at provincials 

Local field lacrosse players have won gold medals with Team Ontario teams at recent tournaments. The Team Ontario under-17 festival team won gold in Peterborough with Kennedy Stauffer, Taylor Chegahno, and Francesca Alpajaro on the roster. The squad was coached by North Stars under-19 coach Lyndsay Brooks. The Team Ontario under-15 team won gold in Peterborough over the Toronto Beaches 8-7 in sudden-death overtime. Owen Sound native Jillian Goldie netted the overtime winner. Local Karly Low joined Goldie on the gold-medal squad. Kariya Beach played with the Team Ontario under-19 club that defeated British Columbia in the gold medal game of the Canadian U19 Field Lacrosse Championships, 15-7, in Peterborough.
