Bacik-Hadden has perfect passing day in JV Cougars' win

The Chatham-Kent Varsity Cougars lost their season finale 48-21 to the Brantford Bisons, while the JV Cougars clinched first place in their division by trouncing the Bisons 56-0.

The Chatham-Kent Cougars lost 48-21 to the Brantford Bisons in Saturday’s regular-season finale in the Ontario Football Conference varsity league at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.

The Cougars (3-4-1) placed fourth in the West Division, while the Bisons (6-1-1) finished in a three-way tie for first.

The Cougars will visit the Waterloo Predators (6-1-1) in a first-round playoff game tentatively scheduled for this Saturday.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Darion Bacik-Hadden threw five touchdown passes as the Cougars beat the visiting Brantford Bisons 56-0 in their OFC regular-season finale Sunday.

Bacik-Hadden was 14-of-14 for 332 passing yards.

He threw two TD passes to Tyler Shumanski (12 and 35 yards) and one apiece to Brett Wegrzyn (42 yards), Trevor Lawton (six yards) and Ryan Grellemore (40 yards).

Lawton also scored on a 45-yard interception return.

Logan Stefina scored the Cougars’ first two touchdowns on 44- and five-yard runs in the first quarter. He kicked eight extra points.

“This was pretty well a flawless performance,” Cougars head coach Herb McCauley said. “If we can maintain that type of play, we will be hard to beat.”

The Cougars (7-0-1) won the tiebreaker for first place in the West Division by allowing 43 points. The Sault Sabercats (7-0-1) allowed 71.

Bacik-Hadden made seven tackles, Brayden Charbonneau had six and an interception, L.J. Hines had six and a fumble recovery, and Lawton and Christian Burgoon each had an interception.

Wegrzyn made four catches for 112 yards. Lawton made three for 54 yards.

The Cougars will host the Bisons (4-4-0) in a first-round playoff game this weekend. Details have yet to be finalized.

BANTAM: The Cougars lost 14-13 to the visiting Oakville Titans in Sunday’s regular-season finale.

The Cougars (2-6-0) placed fifth out of six teams in the OFC West Division.

PEEWEE: Skyler Mattia and Caleb Roberts each scored three touchdowns in the Cougars’ 41-13 home win over the Brantford Bisons in an OFC first-round playoff game Saturday.

Mattia rushed for his three TDs, while Roberts ran for one and caught two TD passes from Sawyer Emmott.

Reed Larson kicked three extra points.

Mattia, C.J. Roberts, Conor Graham and Noah Bourbonnais were defensive standouts as the Cougars stopped the Bisons on several fourth downs. Tezmond Hadden had an interception.

The Cougars will host the Brampton Bulldogs in a semifinal Sunday.
