Art Gabor Classic tips off Friday

The 61st Art Gabor Classic Basketball Tournament tips off Friday and continues Saturday.

Forty-eight teams competing in two divisions (junior and senior) have made the trip to North Bay for this event, attracting more than 700 athletes, 80 coaches, 60 volunteers and hundreds of fans, parents and officials.

The tournament will see 90 games of basketball played in six area gymnasiums – Chippewa, Algonquin, Odyssee, Scollard Hall, West Ferris and Widdifield.

The tournament tips off Friday at 10:30 a.m. The championship

games are set for Saturday night at 6:30 pm (junior) and 8 pm (senior) at Chippewa Secondary School.

NDA hockey tourney underway

The 45th annual NDA High School Hockey Tournament is underway in North Bay with five local teams — Chippewa, ESC Algonquin, St. Joseph-Scollard Hall, West Ferris and Widdifield welcoming Central Algoma, Confederation, Espanola, LoEllen, Manitoulin, L’Horizon and St. Benedict.

Games are being played at Memorial Gardens and the Sam Jacks Recreation Complex today and Friday morning.

Playoff games will be played at Memorial Gardens starting with four quarter-final matches at 4 pm Friday. Semifinals are at 9 and 10:30 am Saturday, followed by the final at 2 pm.

In lieu of admission, tournament organizers are collecting food and monetary donations through the Coach4Food program for the North Bay Food Bank. Last year, $1,500 and 136 lbs of food was donated. For updated scores visit the website www.ndahockeytournament.com
