Worldwide potato harvests have been hit by unfavourable weather this year.

Kevin MacIsaac, general manager of the United Potato Growers of Canada, said this year’s harvest issues are “unprecedented”, because in typical years one or two areas of the country may be negatively impacted, but this year there are problems in every area.

Prince Edward Island seems to have been hit the hardest, so bad that about 7,000 acres were not even harvested.

The growing season was poor, then frost in early September stopped growth.

There have also been problems in parts of the United States and Europe, where a dry season hurt yields, making for a global shortfall.

MacIsaac said prices will definitely be higher this winter.
