A national tradition, as well as a local one, is making its way back to Stonewall.

The 39th annual Stonewall and District Terry Fox Run, which raises funds for cancer research, will start at Stonewall Quarry Park on Sept. 15. Registration will take place inside the Heritage Arts Centre from noon to 1 p.m. Staff from Quarry Physiotherapy will lead participants in a warm-up prior to the run and those walking, running and biking will be led out by Jimm and Aileen Simon on pipes and drums. The course is five kilometres long through the streets of Stonewall with a water station on the route. T-shirts will be available for purchase.

This is Cathy Goresky’s first year as director of the organizing committee, taking over from Ray Steen. She wrote in an email to The Stonewall Argus and Teulon Times that Fox’s Marathon of Hope in 1980, which was cut short by the cancer that eventually took his life, still resonates with her and other Canadians.

“Personally, I think what Terry did was unbelievably courageous,” Goresky wrote. “I have been fortunate to visit both his starting point in St. John’s, N.L. and where his run ended just outside of Thunder Bay. Both monuments and tributes are amazing and bring me to tears each time I have visited. Terry asked that ‘Even if I don’t finish we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.’”

Now, Terry Fox Run events take place in 33 countries on five continents and has raised more than $750 million for cancer research. To register online, visit: terryfox.org.
