Area musicians gave of their time and talent on Saturday, Feb. 2 to helping keep Kinsmen Park’s outdoor rink going.

Held this year at The Pub House by Milano, the annual Pembroke Kinsmen Club fundraiser for the rink was part of the City of Pembroke’s SnoSpree winter festival and was co-ordinated by Doug Skeggs, Jeff Sanders and Brian Abdallah.

The overall goal was to raise about $4,000 and as of Monday, Feb. 4 about $2,500 had been generated with donations and money from auction items at the fundraiser still coming in.

Entertainers such as Mary Mercer, First We Feast, Andy Mayenburg, Jory Turcotte, The Em Tees, Mid-Life Krisis and Station Hill took to the stage beginning in the late afternoon and kept the pub hopping until well into the night.

Skeggs explained the funding is needed for overall maintenance of the outdoor rink during the winter season. He said friends of the rink are grateful to Herb Shaw and Sons Lumber who continue to look after the boards at the rink, and also to the musicians who participate in the fundraiser.

“This is a lot of fun, it’s a good party,” he said. “We’re very lucky this year to have Mark Huckabone’s band, Mid-Life Krisis.”

The fundraiser has taken place annually for about 10 years and over that time has certainly seen a lot of different venues. It began at West Sides in the West-End Mall, then moved to Santa Fe before it closed down, then the Lasso and last year the Pig and Pint. With the closure of that pub, the fundraiser moved again finding a new home at The Pub House by Milano.

Abdallah and Sanders were members of the Kinsmen Club and began organizing the rink fundraisers back when they began a decade ago. After the club shut down, they continued the annual fundraiser to help keep the rink going.
