Ten new pig sites in Ontario were infected with PED (Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea) PED and/or Porcine Deltacoronavirus(PDCoV) in the first four months of 2019, the Ontario Animal Health Network reports.

Veterinarian Christine Pelland said there were known connections amongst some of these sites, and all the farmers are working with their herd veterinarians to contain and limit spread of the virus.

The outbreaks were:

  • finisher farm in Oxford Co.,on Jan 25, 2019 (PED);
  • finisher farm in Wellington Co.(PED) on Feb 01, 2019;
  • a finisher farm Bruce Co. on Feb 02, 2019 (PDCoV);
  • a farrow to feed farm in Grey Co. on Feb 14, 2019 (PED);
  • finisher operation in Huron Co. on Feb 20, 2019 (PED & PDCoV);

“This summary greatly supports the need for enhanced biosecurity practices being implemented by swine farmers,” the OAHN warns. “Biosecurity involves both on farm and beyond the farm aspects.”
