Martin Kerr believes in singing about things which matter and is now bringing his folk music performing style to the live Hot Shotz Music Series in Spruce Grove.

Tonight, audiences will hear the British-Canadian and long time Edmonton resident sing new songs, chat with the audience and get people to relax. He will be joined by openers Travis Matthews and Emmet Michael. All have ties to the local scene and for Kerr; it is a chance to showcase music that he thinks is needed.

“I try to speak to people’s souls,” he said. “There is a need for protest songs again right now in a way that is relevant and meaningful to people. Combining the ‘70s singer-songwriter vibe with some current pop production is what I am in now.”

He also has personal connections to those who run the series.

“I have played in [the Tri-Region] a number of times over the years,” he said. “I know a bunch of other musicians … and Jenesia are actually friends of mine. I think they have gone about booking people they know and want to present to [people].”

Jenesia, also known as Jenesa and Alexander MacMullin, developed the series with the owners of the Shotz Family Sports Lounge after seeing a lack of live music venues in the Spruce Grove – Stony Plain area which catered to everyone. When reached, Jenesa MacMullin offered praise for Kerr, noting his major successes.

“Martin is well-loved and we are honoured to have him come to perform here in Spruce Grove,” Jenesa MacMullin wrote. “We met him about two years ago now and he has since garnered an opening spot for Sarah McLaughlan for Canada 150.”

On Kerr’s website, this is but one of a series of highlights. Kerr has sold out Edmonton’s 1,700-seat Winspear Centre, landed an album at the top of Canadian charts, performed for events during the 2018 Grey cup and even works with an award-winning producer, all while independent. In the future, Kerr wants to continue to build on his success and make an impact.

Martin Kerr, Travis Matthews and Emmet Michael will be performing at 7 p.m. tonight at the Shotz Family Sports Lounge. Tickets can be purchased online or at the venue. For more information, go to the Shotz Lounge page on Facebook. To learn more about Kerr, visit
